In this scene, an automobile passes under falling snow through Shiba Daimon Gate at Koyasan, a major 9th-century temple complex in Wakayama Prefecture, some 50 miles south of Osaka. Approaching the gate, a robed figure in sandals shields himself from the weather with an umbrella. The car, a four-door sedan, is perhaps a Ford or Toyota model. Ford and fellow American companies Chrysler and General Motors manufactured over 200,000 automobiles in Japan between 1925 and 1936.
