In the 15th century, Sekiyado in Chiba Prefecture was developed into a samurai town where warlords resided in the castle and their retainers lived nearby in the same district. In the Edo period (1615-1868), it became an important station on the Tokaido Road that linked Edo (former name of Tokyo) to Kyoto. With the fall of the Shogun in the late 19th century, this town quickly disappeared. Here Hasui depicts a winter view of snow-covered houses constructed of timbers, bamboo, plaster walls, and thatched roofs. The glow above the horizon conveys the past glory of this castle town.
