Stein at Window shows a traditional subject: an artist’s model in the studio, wearing a colorful silk tunic and surrounded by artworks. However the sitter, Efzenka Stein—a working-class émigré from Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic)—is not the type of idealized beauty that graced the previous generation’s paintings. Sloan pictures Stein on a well-worn "Morris" chair, gazing past an artistic assemblage at her feet: a framed painting, ceramic pot, and bit of blue and white china, taking in one of New York City’s bustling neighborhoods outside. She is depicted naturalistically and without blurring her eastern European identity—an artistic choice that defined Ashcan artists.
