Mukinka Mask (Primary Title)
Mukinka Mask (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Salampasu mukinka masks are characterized by a strongly projecting forehead over a prominent nose and deeply sunken eyes. This red-colored wooden mask would have once had a tuft of feathers or a series of small balls made of cane on the top of the head. Mukinka masks are status symbols owned by members of a warrior society, who pay for them, both as an initiation fee and as an indication of their wealth.
