剔紅樓閣樹下人物図香合 明中期 (Primary Title)
明代 雕漆樓閣樹下人物図香合 (Former Title)
Unknown (Artist)
The surface of this box is carved on both sides in intricate detail with figures in landscapes. Such a box would typically be used for holding powdered or kneaded incense. High quality lacquerwares, covered with more than a hundred layers of lacquer, were produced in southern China where warm temperatures of 70 to 80°F with up to 85 percent humidity made this technique possible.
