During the colonial era, a group of people living in the vicinity of the shared borders of Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo were designated as Lobi. In reality this group included the Dagara, Birifor, Teésè, and others, along with the Lobi proper. Native troops were enlisted and saw action in battles in Africa and in Europe during World War I. Further research is needed to identify whether this rifleman’s uniform is British, German, or French in origin.
