This screen illustrates an array of objects
in a scholar’s studio: bronzes associated with ritual ceremonies and ancestor
worship, multivolume books that allude to Confucius’s teachings, and peony flowers
to represent wealth and honor. The artist applied mineral and vegetable
pigments on individual objects for shading and a three-dimensional effect. Placed
in living quarters, the screen conveyed the tastes
of its owner, who valued classical teaching and appreciated antiques.
