This watercolor study was made in preparation for Shinsui’s final woodblock print of Miidera Temple, which is on display to the left. In the printmaking process, an artist would first sketch a scene and then prepare a watercolor drawing. Next, the artist, publisher, block carver, and printer would work collaboratively to determine the carving details and choice of color. In the carving process, the drawing would be destroyed, whereas the watercolor would provide a reference for the color separation to the printer.
