Coorte renders the individual strawberries in this
still life with an almost botanical accuracy. The
characteristic restraint of his compositions is evident
here in the way he presents the ripe reds and shimmering whites of the fruits in a fine Chinese porcelain
bowl decorated with blue-green tones. The sheer
abundance of this seasonal delight and its exotic
container seduce the eye. The artist invites the viewer
to imagine the sweet taste and aroma of the local treat
that was usually savored only on special occasions.
He simultaneously appeals to the appreciation of the
connoisseur for rare, imported artifacts.
