Ericksons is a canonical work in Andrew Wyeth’s vast, impressive oeuvre spanning several decades. The artist frequently took as his subjects the rural landscapes and inhabitants near his home and studio. Recognized as not only a master portrait of George Erickson, but also an intimate view of his home in Thomaston, Maine, Ericksons is one of Wyeth’s strongest demonstrations in multiple points of compositional interest: the cropped foreground figure versus the recession to the open door at left; the nearness of Erickson versus his wayward gaze; and the light streaming through the window against the reflective silver on the stove, which as Wyeth remembered, George Erickson always kept very polished.
