Born to an educated family in Guangxi, southern China, Zhong Dexiang won the title of Jinshi in 1876 and was appointed a civil official by the court. In this set of scrolls, reading from right to left, Zhong transcribed an excerpt of Dong Qichang’s famous essay on the history of Chinese painting in his distinctive semi-cursive calligraphic style that combines round and angular strokes.
