By the end of the 19th century, Japanese art had become widely circulated in Europe, and among the most popularized works of art was Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760-1849) Under the Wave off Kanagawa, from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Drawing inspiration from the famed woodblock print, the Belgian designer Henri Privat-Livemont created this composition of a sirenic woman emerging from the sea’s waves. Typical of Privat-Livemont’s ornamental design style, the figure’s hair is adorned with shimmering shells and pearls, like jewels from the sea.
