This statuette and the adjacent mirror illustrate different ways of depicting the female form in Egyptian art. This abstract form was probably influenced by non-Egyptian traditions, perhaps from Nubia (to the south of Egypt), Western Asia, or both. Originally, earrings and hair—perhaps made of threaded beads—were inserted into the holes pierced in the ears and around the top of the head; the indentations around her waist perhaps represent tattoos or jewelry.
