This woman’s outfit—pink dress and white blouse complemented by a deep-black shawl—is characteristic of the models who appear in John Singer Sargent’s Venetian paintings. Completing this work during one of the first of his many trips to the city, the Paris-based artist seemed equally enthralled by both the architecture and residents of Venice, returning to create new paintings almost every year over several decades of his life. In the 1880s, the beautiful and historic city was a popular destination for artists, including those, like Sargent, who often took the alleyways and dimly lit interiors of centuries-old structures as their subjects.
