The Hwaseong Fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796 during the reign of King Jeongjo (1752–1800), was built to safeguard the remains of his father, Crown Prince Sado. The fortress has four gates, one on each side, and its outer wall stretches for three and a half miles. Hasui’s print depicts the Hwaseomun, or west gate, seen from the interior of the fortress. This gate is a simple stone structure topped with a wooden pavilion. A wall extends in front of the gate, forming a halfmoon shape to deter oncoming attacks.
