This pair of screens depicts deer, sacred messengers to Buddhist and Shinto deities, strolling amidst seasonal landscapes. The absence of human activity, softness of deer's fur, snow-covered pine grove, and the misty atmosphere imbue the screens with an aura of sanctity and myths. In strong and intricate strokes, Mori Kansai, Kyoto-based artist of Maruyama-Shijo style of painting, created these tranquil and lyrical scenes, revealing the Western influence of naturalism, and light and shading effects on 19th-century Japanese painting.
