This terracotta may have been used as an antefix (an attachment that held roof tiles in place) or as acroterium (a sculpture placed on the peak or corners of a temple’s pediment). High-quality stone like marble was not available in Etruria and temples were typically decorated with terracotta sculptures and reliefs and painted in vibrant colors.
