Margaret Bourke-White made an unprecedented second trip in 1931 to the Soviet Union, where she continued her visits to photograph factories. This journey resulted in a series of articles published in the New York Times Magazine, including “Silk Stockings in the Five-Year Plan,” a discussion of the growing number of women in the Soviet workforce. She reassured American readers that Russian women were able to work in factories and still maintain their femininity. Bourke- White’s photograph accomplishes much of the same, as a woman carefully examines a long drape of lace; its delicacy and refinement were understood as an appropriate concern for female laborers.
