Twins Seven Seven was an important figure among 20thcentury Yoruba artistic circles, working as dancer, musician, and visual artist and exhibiting work widely in the United States and throughout the world. This painting is suggestive of Yoruba author D.O. Fagunwa’s 1938 novel Forest of a Thousand Daemons, which tells the story of a magically powerful hunter who encounters many supernatural beings during his travels through a great forest. This scene depicts fantastical beasts morphing into hybrid creatures as they do battle.
