Cat (Primary Title)
Anne Arnold, American, 1925–2014 (Artist)
Fifty Works for Fifty States: In 2008, in a unique partnership with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Vogels distributed twenty-five hundred works across the country, giving fifty works to one art museum in each of the fifty states. This exhibition, The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States, showcases the fifty works VMFA received as part of that initiative, which bears the same title. As a diverse and rich body of work, the Vogels' generous giftattests to their passion and commitment to sharing contemporary art with the public.
Anne Arnold Arnold emerged in the early 1960s with a body of work that was out of step with most of the nonfigurative art of her generation. Yet she has consistently garnered respect and positive reviews for her singular vision and originality. Known primarily for her sculptures of animals, Arnold has used a variety of materials, including carved wood, stone, and clay, to express the specificity of her subject's character beyond species or breed. This delicate watercolor conveys the feline's volumetric form in space and is her only work in the collection. The Vogels were drawn to the small sketch presumably because of their love of animals: their petsincluded cats, turtles, and tropical fish.
Some object records are not complete and do not reflect VMFA's full and current knowledge. VMFA makes routine updates as records are reviewed and enhanced.
