roller-printed furnishing panel (Object Name)
Félix Albert Anthyme Aubert, French, 1866–1940 (Designer)
Scheurer Lauth et Cie, French (Alsace, Thann), 1872 - 1935 (Printer)
Félix Aubert was a key contributor to the Art Nouveau decorative vocabulary in the French textile industry. He created designs for wall decoration, furnishing fabrics, carpets, and lace. This striking textile is composed of sinuous, long-stemmed water irises and ribbonlike motifs. The panel shows Aubert’s mastery of a composition in which lines and rhythm dominate. He displayed a selection of furnishing textiles with water irises at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900. This textile was carefully preserved for decades in the archives of Scheurer, Lauth et Cie so it is in especially excellent condition.
