Blaues Meer (Primary Title)
Blue Sea (Translation)
Emil Nolde, German, 1867 - 1956 (Artist)
Nolde joined Die Brücke early in its history; however, his membership was tenuous and short-lived as he was more of a loner than a joiner. Brooding seascapes were one of Nolde’s specialties, and depicted here is the North Sea near Nolde’s familyfarm. The painting alludes to human presence amidst the turbulent sea and sky, with one vertical stroke of paint evoking the sail of a boat.
