"I am interested in our complex and vital relationship with animals; this connection links animals, humans, and the divine." —Georgianne Stinnett

Based in Richmond and a past winner of VMFA’s Professional Artist Fellowship, Stinnett studied photography at Virginia Commonwealth University. She initially focused on landscape imagery but, in 1995, became intrigued by taxidermy forms, regarding them as “templates, or molds for the animals represented.” She uses bright lighting and strong contrast between saturated black backgrounds and yellowish white forms to imbue these ordinary objects with a strange mixture of elegance and mystery. In addition, Dog has an uncanny resemblance to the famous painting Grande Odalisque (1814) by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, which also provides the reference for another work on view nearby in this gallery.
