Beginning in the 16th century, icons and manuscripts began to include images of saints, archangels, and the resurrected Christ with hand crosses. In the adjacent triptych icon, the holy men in the register beneath the Virgin and Child hold slenderhand crosses similar in design to this 12th-century work.
