Qian Weicheng scored first place on the imperial service exam in 1745 and entered the court at the age of 26. Young and ambitious, he became a leading painter under the guidance of Dong Bangda, a master court painter. This painting, remounted from a folding fan, shows how Qian designed a landscape scene within a limited, arc-shaped composition. Using brown and dark green, he depicts a snowy evening scene of mountains that are deep, silent, and majestic, with lonely travelers crossing a bridge toward a mountain gate on the hillside.
