The first mention of the Han dynasty dancer and musician Zhao Feiyan appeared in the Diverse Notes on the Western Capital, a Chinese text published in the 4th century. This painting depicts Feiyan wearing long sleeves, and dancing with a brown ribbon. The golden phoenix crown reveals her royal status as Empress of Chengdi (reigned 33–7 BC). The artist revealed in the inscription that this work was dedicated to his father’s friend and painted in his studio six days before New Year’s Eve 1889.
