Figures and Rocky Shore (Primary Title)
Jean Lurçat, French, 1892 - 1966 (Artist)
Lurçat’s reintroduction of the human figure in his art was motivated in part by politics. Living in a climate of mounting political crises during the build-up to World War II, Lurçat became convinced that modern artists should promote more directly a shared social reality. Figures and Rocky Shore presents a working man in the forefront of the composition, conveying a proud monumentality.
