This statue is probably a depiction of a married couple, although no inscription identifies them. Statue groups of divine and mortal families, often including children, are common in Egyptian art. This statue dates to the Old Kingdom, when the conventions for Egyptian art were taking form. The statues’ poses—left foot forward for the man, feet together for the woman—remained a common way for depicting male and female figures for over two thousand years.
