秋草蒔絵阿古陀香炉 室町時代 (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This small lacquered censer, lined with copper, was used for perfuming garments or for incense ceremonies. A censer like this one was first used by Buddhist monks in temples and then adopted by courtiers for domestic use. Intricate designs of autumngrasses and a bamboo fence convey the elegance and sophisticated technique of lacquerware craftsmanship of the 15th century.
