"I paint from remembered landscapes that I carry with me—and remembered feelings of them, which of course become transformed. I could certainly never mirror nature. I would more like to paint what it leaves with me." —Joan Mitchell

Mitchell spent much of her career living between New York and France. Known to be outspoken, she openly discussed the difficulties of being taken seriously as a female painter in the 1950s and 1960s, especially when seeking gallery representation. Nonetheless, she received positive reviews early in her career and quickly gained respect for her fast-paced, explosive compositions referencing specific landscapes in an abstract mode.
