Though Fantin-Latour became friends with the Impressionists, the painter always considered himself a Realist and continued to elaborate upon the example of his friend and teacher Gustave Courbet. This painting— with its balances, pyramidal composition—demonstrates Fantin’s exacting observation of color, light, and texture. A contemporary observer once testified that the artist studied each flower as carefully as one would study a human face.
