Marquet studied under Gustave Moreau for four years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and there also formed a lifelong friendship with Henri Matisse. This early still life shows the artist’s affinity for Realist painting similar to the work of Henri Fantin-Latour, whose paintings are also in the Mellon collection.
