Lépine, who exhibited paintings at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, here renders his characteristic subject: the River Seine flowing through the heart of Paris. Situated on the Île de la Cité, the Gothic cathedral Notre-Dame rises above the skyline at the center of the composition. Notre- Dame was controversially—and imaginatively—restored by architect Viollet-le-Duc during the mid-19th century.
