Morris & Company, British (London), 1881–1940 (Retailer)
The most renowned figure of the British Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris, is perhaps best known for his many wallpaper designs. Morris’s work is characterized by his distinctly graphic floral motifs combined with woodblock techniques inspired by Japanese printmaking. An example of this 1877 design of apples and acanthus leaves, which was available in different colors, was used to cover the walls of Morris’s daughter May’s workroom at her home in Hammersmith, London.
