Educator, painter, printmaker, and photographer Arthur Wesley Dow was inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e prints, particularly those by 18th-century artist Katushika Hokusai. The influence of the traditional woodblock style is evident in the asymmetrical composition of the dark-colored landscape, paired with the sky’s lighter gradient. In 1895, Louis Prang & Company acquired the journal Modern Art, which covered art, artists, and techniques contemporary to the late 19th century. Dow was commissioned to create this advertisement that showcased Prang’s new management, as well as the new editor Joseph Moore Bowles.
