Best known for his lively illustrations to Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), the Philadelphia-born W. W. Denslow was active in various design movements in late-19th-century America. Trained in New York, he was particularly involved with the Arts and Crafts Roycroft community and produced numerous books, cartoons, and magazine covers designed in a style described as “both broadly humorous and boldly Art Nouveau.”
