A self-taught artist, Joseph Cornell developed a deeply personal style influenced by Surrealist art and theory that he encountered in 1930s New York. Working largely with found elements and appropriated imagery, he created intricate collages andshadowboxes that evoked the strangeness of the dream world and the subconscious. The natural world, particularly birds, resonated intensely with the artist, who often used animal imagery. Here the bird in flight, seen through broken glass that gives the appearance of a battered window, alludes to powerful notions of freedom and the unfettered experience of flight.
