Mr. J. F. Sharp's Private Drag outside the Roebuck Inn, Turnham Green (Primary Title)
James Pollard, English, 1792 - 1867 (Artist)
The identity of Mr. J. F. Sharp of this painting’s title remains unknown; however, the Roebuck Inn was a well-known stop on the main road west out of London. While Mr. Sharp is not shown, the cape draped over the box seat indicates that he may have stopped in for a drink while an ostler, shown behind the horses at right, tends to his team. For reasons of visibility at night, it was usual to harness a light-colored horse to the carriage’s right side (the “offleader,” or inside-road position for English vehicles).
