Pendant Double Diptych (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
The depiction of Jesus and his mother, Mary, on this icon imitates the famed icon of the Virgin and Child in Rome’s church of Santa Maria Maggiore, copies of which Jesuit missionaries spread widely. Saint George slaying the dragon fills the side panel, and the two paintings on the reverse include the Crucifixion and the resurrected Christ raising Adam and Eve from the dead.
