Images relating to Egypt and Ethiopia are joined in this diptych: the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt and the 14th-century Ethiopian saint Gabra Manfas Qeddus (“Servant of the Holy Spirit”). Born in Egypt, the saint was descended from the Israelite tribe of Benjamin and lived many years in the wilderness. For protection from the elements, God caused a coat of white hair to cover his body, as depicted here. Later, in Ethiopia, he preached, performed miracles, founded a monastery at Zuqualla, and was befriended by lions and leopards.
