Vlaminck’s art is defined by its virile and impetuous style, in keeping with this artist’s outsized persona. From the beginning of his career in 1905 as a core member of the avant-garde Fauve group, Vlaminck favored the expressive over the intellectual. His robust brushwork aptly displays that preference. In this painting of a storm striking a red-roofed hillside town, the strokes are heavy, particularly in the foreground, and their rhythm is continuous across the canvas. This emphasis on visual pattern creates dynamic energy. Images like The Storm defined Vlaminck as a principal painter of rural France.
