Around 1920, Adolphe Mouron moved from Ukraine to Paris to study art. While there, he assumed the pseudonym "Cassandre" for producing his graphic designs. Cassandre is best known for his stylized Art Deco travel posters, commissioned by various companies to promote their means of conveyance. This poster advertises the speed, luxury, and comfort of the company Chemin de fer du Nord’s railways, which Cassandre depicts in the background of his composition, behind a compass hand pointing northwest.
