Sara November was an active member of Richmond’s art world in the late 1920s and 1930s. She chaired the Richmond Academy of Art’s committee of fine arts and originated the idea of the traveling exhibition vehicle known as the Artmobile – both of which shaped the founding and practice of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Born and trained in New York, November began her career producing commercial illustrations for various retail stores. After her move to Richmond in the mid-1920s, she spent more time on her painting, studying privately with Theresa Pollak and actively submitting work – such as Daily Devotions – to local and national exhibitions. November was also acclaimed as a progressive educator who, in 1934, established and taught free art classes for African Americans at Richmond’s Phillis Wheatley YWCA.
