This plate was produced by Marie Bracquemond as part of the Service Fleurs et Rubans (Flowers and Ribbon Service). After the success of her husband's (Felix Bracquemond) Service Rousseau, a set inspired by Hokusai's Manga, at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, Felix conceived of Fleurs et Rubans. Lighter in tone and more consistently ornamental than the Service Rousseau , the Service Fleurs et Rubans primarily accentuates the quasi-abstract nature of the flowers and the arabesques of ribbons. Marie's inclusion of a domestic and seemingly contemporary subject matter is consistent with her painterly output of scenes of domestic life, and can be considered her own novel artistic conception and contribution to the Service Fleurs et Rubans.

Two of Felix Bracquemond's etchings on paper related to the Service Fleurs et Rubans are included in the VMFA's collection as well: "Wallflower, for the Service Fleurs et Rubans" (ca.1879) and" Cornflower, for the Service Fleurs et Rubans" (ca. 1879).

Back marked "CREIL / & Cie / MONTEREAU / MODEL / HAVILAND & Cie a Paris" in black; artist signed in transfer "MB"
impressed "B & Cie DEPOSE" with conjoined letters "CM".
