The commanding, angled shape rising from the head of this very old mask is a crest of a type no longer made after the early twentieth century. While its specific meaning may be lost to time, the dramatic sight of the form moving in a swirling dance is easy to imagine. Its geometric simplicity and slenderness make this mask classic example of Dogon sculpture.
