Although little is known about the specific character or spirit portrayed by Bena Biombo masks, they are used in marking life’s important passages, such as initiation rites and funeral ceremonies. Their coloration and facial patterning are similar to masks of the neighboring Pende culture, as in the large, adjacent mask.
