Its prominent beak clearly indicates that this mask represents a bird, probably a hornbill. Eroded by use and time, the condition of the crest makes it difficult to define, but it may represent a standing bird with wings spread, similar to the large Senufo bird statue or headdress on the opposite platform. The two small stems at the very top appear to have been broken long ago, suggesting that another form, perhaps another bird, once stood there.
