"Irrational thoughts should be followed absolutely and logically." —Sol LeWitt

These drawings are LeWitt’s studies for Splotch #22, the large sculpture in the center of the room. LeWitt saw these hand-drawn designs as the work’s footprint. Hedivided the footprints into hundreds of irregular cells. One drawing shows the random but equal assignment of primary and secondary colors to the cells; the other shows the cells’ various heights, given in inches. Using computer-generated renderings of LeWitt’s drawings, a fabricator built the sculpture with industrial-grade foam coated with epoxy resin and fiberglass, followed by paint and varnish.
