Mann came to prominence in the early 1990s for Immediate Family, a collection of candid images of her young children that combined idyllic views of everyday life in and around their Virginia home with intimations of sensuality and mortality that perhaps lay beyond the subjects’ grasp. Mann followed these family pictures with a decade of landscape images; she then returned to the subject of her children, grown and in their twenties. Pushed to the front of the picture plane and enlarged to monumental scale, Mann’s elder daughter is here free of the vernacular strains that ran through Immediate Family. Scratches, blurs, fissures, and peeling—accidental artifacts of the 19th-century collodion wet-plate process that Mann employs—emphasize the photograph’s physical nature and add a further layer of gravity by suggesting time’s ravages.
