Watanabe Shōzaburō 渡邊庄三郎, Japanese, 1885 - 1962 (Publisher)
This view of a snow-covered Mount Fuji is seen from the famed Satta Pass, overlooking Suruga Bay. By portraying Fuji from this familiar perspective, Hasui is paying homage to woodblock printmaker Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), whose popular series Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (1833–34) contained a similar print and achieved unprecedented commercial success in 19th century Japan. Stoic mountains and glistening waters convey poetic and nationalistic sentiment.
